I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change- 2007
I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change
Opens July 13
A musical revue about love and relationships shines on the Racine Theatre Guild stage this summer, opening July 13 and running two weekends through July 22. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, the long-running Off-Broadway sensation, is a combination of comedy sketches and songs, opening the RTG’s celebratory 70th season of presenting live community theatre in Racine.
With book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music by Jimmy Roberts, this show is full of sharp observations about men and women, dating, love and marriage. RTG audiences will remember Joe DiPietro as the playwright who wrote Over the River and Through the Woods, a popular comedy we presented in 2002.
Both the skits and the songs explore the mysteries of love, in dating, seeking and finding a mate. Then it looks at marriage, life with children, and how relationships can deepen over the years. With a cast of four men and four women, each one takes an assortment of roles in the various depictions of life and love. The content is adult in nature, and the show contains references to sex, so it is not recommended for young children.
Songs include “A Stud and A Babe,” where a nerdy couple expresses their inner insecurities; “Tear Jerk,” where a manly man watches a chick flick with his date; “Hey There, Single Guy,” where the parents bemoan the fate of their still-single son; “Always a Bridesmaid,” with a woman describing all the awful dresses she has had to wear; “Waiting,” a song most of the ladies at the RTG can relate to since it is about waiting to use the bathroom; “Shouldn’t I Be Less in Love with You?” sung by a man who is amazed that he still loves his wife of 30 years; and “I Can Live with That,” in a very funny sketch called “Funerals Are for Dating,” where two seniors move on after losing their spouses.
I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the longest-running musical revue in Off-Broadway history, now in its 11th year. Its many national and international productions make it clear that audiences everywhere can relate to its humor and insights.
An article about the show’s 10th anniversary noted: “This hilarious hit musical celebrates the modern-day suburban mating game. Audiences fill the theatre with laughter as the cast explores the joys of dating, romance, lovers, marriage and in-laws.”
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel wrote of a local production: “Joe DiPietro is responsible for the shrewdly observed and comically astute vignettes. Jimmy Roberts’ Broadway show tune-ish score is the perfect fit for the material.”
I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change opens July 13 and runs through July 22. Call the box office at 262-633-4218 to order tickets or for further information. It’s the perfect light-hearted summer fare, an entertaining look at love.

Season 70 Takes the Stage
“Love, American Style” takes the stage as we open our 70th season at the Theatre Guild. Remember that old TV show? Now update it and add music and you have the hit musical I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. What a great title! Doesn’t it just sum up many aspects of life? This is a show we have wanted to produce for several years, but it has always been restricted due to professional productions in Milwaukee or Chicago. We’re happy to offer it to you now.
Everyone who has ever been in love will be touched by the humor and emotion depicted in these comic sketches and songs. One New York actor commented that this was one of the most honest musicals she had ever done. At first that may sound strange since the show has one crazy song after another. However, if you look deeper, she is correct. This show tells the truth about men and women, but does so in a very light-hearted way. We hope you’ll laugh along with us.
One note: this is not a show for children, because of adult situations and slightly off-color humor. It’s a show we call “a little bit naughty,” but in a very fun and silly way.
We certainly hope you’ll join us for all the rest of the plays in our 70th anniversary year. You still have time to buy season tickets, so you are guaranteed a seat at all of our upcoming shows. From the hugely funny comedy about producing theatre, Laughing Stock, to the smash musical Guys and Dolls, you’ll get a fantastic entertainment package at the Racine Theatre Guild.
